Since 2013 we have worked alongside Andy Pressman (art director of Verso Books) as cover designers. The titles have ranged from the obscure to the mainstream, covering subjects such as literature, philosophy and politics. To us, designing book covers requires a peculiar kind of discipline. You must accept input from many sources; editors, authors, sales representatives etc. A brief is more of a starting point than a fixed set of instructions, and the designer has to abandon any highfalutin notions of process. In our experience, you throw a bunch of stuff out there and see what sticks. It’s to Andy’s credit that so many nice pieces of design actually come to fruition. You can check out his blog here.
